Lotan is a small island out in the Eastern Seas which was settled about ten generations ago by a few waves of settlers. Arable plains and forests cover most of the western half of the island, while the eastern half is hilly or mountainous. The settlers, of which there was a mix of humans, elves, dwarves, gnomes, and halflings, who came to Lotan have prospered on the rich farmland in the west and the ore-filled mountains of the east. Nowadays, the denizens of Lotan no longer describe themselves according to the clans that they originally arrived as part of, but rather by which region or city-state that they currently make their home.
Current-day Lotan is comprised of three city-states, Kyre, Westport, and Gulsk. The three city states have coexisted peacefully and benefited much from trade between them. As the respective cities became populated, villages and small farming and mining communities spread out radially from the city centers. These small villages and communities are closely tied with their parent city for trade, protection, and governance.
Within the last year, an unusually coordinated series of attacks and pillaging from several orc clans along the borders of all three city-states has been taking place. Kyre, the state with the greatest number of small farming communities has been hit the hardest. As a result, trade within and between states has been strained and rumors from each state abound about the other states being behind the attacks.
